The Study for Karachi Transportation Improvement Project in the Islami Republic of Pakistan

Karachi City is the industrial and commercial hub of Pakistan. Its role in the national economy is pivotal. The current population is over 18 million growing at an annual rate of 4 % including natural growth and migration from the other provinces. Karachi Transport Study was conducted during the period 1987-91. The Study recommended building of 87.4 kilometers network of transit ways in the major traffic corridors of Karachi and its suburbs for exclusive use of mass transit vehicles. These transit ways were to be designed and built as a busway being convertible to Light Rail Transit Ways network. The transit way network was translated into mass transit Master Plan comprising of 6 priority corridors. Despite, all possible efforts, there had been no progress towards implementation of the same.
