The backwardness of Muslims in economy, particularly in business, leads towards wrong perception on the teaching of Islam in this respect. This paper reviews some idea and wisdom on the subject of business in Islamic literatures hoping that it will shed some light in the subject matter. This review includes framework of Islam, earning a livelihood, business in Quran, Prophet Muhammad as a trader, business as means to propagate Islam, business jihad and also some critical issues in current Islamic business. Business is significant in Islam. Everywhere in Quran mention about business. Personality and character of prophet Muhammad was nurtured through business profession for 28 years before appointed as messenger of Allah. One of the mean Islam spread was through business and trade. So, Muslims nowadays need to shift their paradigm to regard business as a career of devotion and a fardhu kifayah. Muslims should employ the spirit of jihad in economics and business, so that the spirit can help them to rise up like earlier Muslim generation who were very successful. Finally, Muslim academia also needs to contribute to theoretical development of Islamic economics and business so that it will not be seen as merely Islamic Finance.
