Although hijab initially appears as a simple religious commandment, the way it is faced and implemented by social actors in various environments of Iranian society has given it a distinct and complex characteristic. This research aims to examine and understand the phenomenon of norm substitution and the selection of hijab styles among girls who have mothers who fully observe hijab, from the perspective of their socialization process. The reason for choosing this scope for the study is an expectation that naturally exists for reproducing this norm and religious behavioral pattern in the educational environment of the family. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach and grounded theory. The core concept derived from the study is the notion of “convincing conformity,” which has been analyzed using an explanatory model. The performance of religious duties, the dominant atmosphere of the family, the type of relationship with the opposite sex, and especially the influence of the mother have been identified as the main causal factors influencing the choice of girls’ dress. The structural weakening of the institution of the family in recent decades has been recognized as one of the factors reducing its influence on children, and accordingly, this research suggests some strategies to address this issue.
