The names of Surah Yasin

Surah Yasin has been given several other names:

  1. Habib al-Najjar: Habib al-Najjar was a faithful man who lived in the city of Antioch in the land of Syria among a stubborn and rebellious people. After accepting the call of the prophet of his time, he was martyred by his own people. The story of this righteous man is mentioned in verses 13-30 of Surah Yasin. In honor of his sacrifices and bravery, this surah is named after him.
  2. Dafi’ah: This surah repels all forms of moral and spiritual corruption from its reciter and practitioner, hence it is called “Dafi’ah” (the repeller).
  3. Mu’ammah: Derived from the root “عموم” (comprehensiveness), it is called “Mu’ammah” because it encompasses the blessings of this world and the hereafter for its reciter and practitioner. In other words, whoever connects with this surah will be blessed in both this life and the next. This naming is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him), which highlights the exceptional virtue and greatness of this surah, making it unique among the Quranic surahs.
  4. Qadhiyah: Derived from the root “قضى” (to fulfill), it means “the fulfiller.” Surah Yasin fulfills the needs of those who recite and act upon it, hence it is also called “Qadhiyah,” as mentioned in hadiths.
  5. Heart of the Quran: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Everything has a heart, and the heart of the Quran is Surah Yasin.” Therefore, this surah is called the “Heart of the Quran.”
