I n Arabic kal¥m means ‘speech’, or a sequence of words. However it also means ‘dialogue’; and this is the meaning which was intended in the case of Islamic kal¥m. In its philosophical context kal¥m denotes a collection of concepts, assumptions, principles, and problems that is used to explain the relationship between God and the physical world in accordance with the basics of the Islamic creed.
